Well written - I hope she's figured out why carbon is a metal. Or at least why metals are classified as metals. :)

My question would be - how do you teach students to ask "why?" - kids start doing that in their terrible twos - maybe parents have a greater part to play to encourage the curiousity of asking why, which might be very well stifled in the 4 years plus before the kids enter the school system in Primary 1.

 Interesting nugget of life:

In the mornings when we leave for work, we cross two road junctions. One is near Guangyang Secondary. The other is near Raffles Institution. When the pedestrian crossing light changes from green to blinking green and then red, two interesing phenomena are observed:

1. The Guangyang Sec students stroll on without a care in the world
2. The Raffles Institution students rush to cross the road, running if they need to

Some other "environment factors" could be at play of course:

1. The junction near RI is significantly larger and could be perceived as more dangerous.
2. The junction near RI is the second junction that we cross, about 2 minutes later. The RI kids could just be late for school, assuming both schools start at the same time.

But it also gets me thinking about the kids and their individual motivations. Are the RI kids more driven? Or are they just more conforming to what society expects? Are the Guangyang kids bochup because the school isn't as draconian on discipline? Or maybe they're just more playful.
